Abundant Life

By Janie Crane

Do you daydream? I am a daydreamer. I love to dream. I love to drift off into thoughts of what the future might hold. What’s my potential? What opportunities will come my way? What successes will I have? Fantasizing about the future takes me to places I have never been and to meet people I have never met.  Sometimes I will even play out conversations in my head.

As I have matured, my dreams have changed. As a little girl I dreamed of being a paleontologist. Yup, I wanted to dig up dinosaur bones. In high school I dreamed of being a professional soccer player scoring that winning goal in the World Cup like Brandi Chastain. In my twenties I dreamed of a world free from injustice where commercials of starving kids in Africa would no longer air. Although my dreams have changed through the years, one thought seems to stick around: fulfillment. Regardless of the dream’s details, I have always wanted to live a fulfilled life.

For years I have been perplexed by Jesus’ statement that he has come so that we might have life and life abundantly (John 10:10). An abundant life. That’s what I want. I want a life that is abounding to awesomeness; a life of meaning, of legacy, of contentment. I want an abundant life. Do you? Me too.

But, have you ever seen an abundant life? They are kind of hard to come by these days. In fact, I’m not sure I’d know one if I saw one, so I looked up the word that Jesus uses: abundant. Here’s what I found:

The word means…

…of persons, extraordinary, eminent, remarkable , esp. for learning

…beyond others in a thing; greater things than this, greater than a prophet

…more than sufficient, redundant, superfluous, a surplus; more than sufficient

…out of the common way, extraordinary, uncommon, remarkable, signal, strange

…excessive, extravagant; to commit extravagancies

…of persons, extravagant, over-curious

…beyond the regular number or size, prodigious*

Related words…

Overflow

To abound/exceed

More abundantly

Superabundant

Exceedingly*

Wow. Can you imagine being extraordinary, remarkable, over curious, or be beyond others? I can and it excites me…until reality sets in. I am not extraordinary or that remarkable. I am kind of a Plain Jane. So, what does this abundant life look like for me? How do I become this extraordinary person?

Well, that’s what we are going to find out. Here, through this blog, we are going to dream about what this abundant life looks like … and what it doesn’t…for you and for me. We are going to learn how to reach our full potential. Abound to a life fulfilled…abundantly filled.
